The Beginning

This week I spent my Genius hour time researching a few essential things that everyone must know in the kitchen. I felt that this would give me a good basis of knowledge before I dive into the more specific and fun stuff. To start, I researched the essential equipment that you must have in your kitchen to successfully cook the majority of meals. The problem I had here was that many of the websites gave me unnecessary items that are a lot more useful for specific dishes, rather than just the kitchen essentials. After some more research and comparing multiple sites I was able to break it down to a total of 17 items that everyone must have in their kitchen. As it stands now, I do live at home so all of the kitchen materials are already provided for me. With that being said, I will be moving out one day so I figured this list would still be very beneficial to me. Moving on from here, I decided to research skills that every new cook should know. A skill such as how to make a stock, or how to make a flavourful sauce. These are things that I will be researching the specifics of later on, however for now I at least have a general list, and then can focus on the ones I'm most interested in. It is at this point that I then realized I should probably know some general knife skills and safety. I was able to find a fantastic website that explained through mini-videos how to safely break down a variety of common fruits and vegetables. This website was probably my favorite that I discovered thus far in my research and I'm super excited to share the information with you guys in my final product. Lastly, although most of it was common sense, I decided to research basic kitchen safety. I feel that this is something that would be good to have down to a tee and probably good to include in my product.

Looking back on my initial research, I've already been able to learn so much in such a short period of time. I'm excited to see how far I can take my cooking and kitchen knowledge. I'm treating every hour block as a step closer to being able to throw down in the kitchen. With that being said, I'll never get better at the stuff I learn unless I practice, which I'm going to be starting to do this week. I'll be providing pictures along the way to update everyone on my progress. From here, I plan on getting into some of the essential skills that I researched such as making stock and learning how exactly to do some of the more interesting ones. All in all, I'm very excited to keep moving forward with this project and learning as much as I can. Thanks for reading :)
